Advent 2009: Caritas in Veritate

Picture by Mike West on flickr.com On 7th July this year, Pope Benedict issued an encyclical letter, Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) on the theme of social development in a global context, in the light of the Gospel.

This Advent, as a way of preparing for the celebration of the coming of our Saviour, Pray-as-you-go will be focusing on some of the issues raised and insights offered in this letter.

For these next four weeks, the scripture reading each day will be as usual, but the format of Pray-as-you-go will be a little different, reflecting on the reading in the light of one of the themes of the encyclical, with the aim of encouraging a prayerful consideration not only of the scripture, but also of the realities of the world around us, with the help of these writings of the Holy Father.

If you would like to read more about Caritas in Veritate, there is an introduction to it on Thinking Faith, the British Jesuits' online journal, which will be followed by further reflections this Advent:

You may wish to read the whole encyclical yourself, which can be found on the Vatican website:

Another way to enter into consideration of the encyclical is to look at the word cloud below, constructed from the words used in the letter, and reflecting its language and themes:

We hope in this way to help you to reflect prayerfully on God's word as well as God's world, in preparation for the coming of His Son at Christmas.
